Project 20/20 - The Basics

Project 20/20 was started in 2008 by Brown University students to retrofit lighting in low-income Rhode Island residences, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions in the greater Providence community. At no cost to residents, students install compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), which generate immediate savings on monthly utility bills. Project 20/20 is funded through Wal-Mart and Community Carbon Use Reduction at Brown (CCURB). Through this project, Brown University shows commitment and leadership in combating climate change through reducing carbon emissions in the community.

The Program

Brown University students have partnered with professors, Roger Williams University students, Bay View High School students and East Bay Community Action Program volunteers in order to visit the homes of those who have signed up for this service. Having completed a pilot program in the spring and summer of 2008, working tirelessly through the fall, we are now ready to work towards the completion of our goal of 5,000 Rhode Island homes. In preparation for each installation we call up the resident to set up an appointment, at a time when an adult will be home. A pair of Project 20/20 team members arrive at the home, discuss the benefits of the light bulbs, and proceed to change every incandescent.

NSF Grant with HERO

The Clark University Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO) undergraduate research program has just been awarded a major NSF grant to take HERO to the national level.

Our URL is: http://www.clarku.edu/hero where students can find a brochure and all sorts of information. This summer we will be conducting a set of projects that use remote sensing, to examine either Massachusetts forests or suburban Boston lawns and associated water management concerns. Some of our inquiries will be grounded entirely in remote sensing, while others will use remote sensing to answer landscape ecology or social science research questions. Thus we value a range of student backgrounds, including not only GIScience but also human and environmental geography, and related fields.

Students will be paid $4000 for 8 weeks, $300/wk for room/board, transportation costs to/from Worcester, and, if their research productivity is good, an expenses-paid trip to the March 2010 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers (in D.C.) to present their research results.

Application deadline is Sunday, March 1.

There are no formal prerequisites for students to be accepted into the HERO program save an inquisitive mind and a willingness to learn. Of course, some background in urban studies, landscape ecology, and/or remote sensing is helpful. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. NSF is keen that we succeed in matriculating women and persons from other underrepresented groups.
