Note from CES Computer Wiz, Bud Tennille
“This morning [last week] per Kurt Teichert's instruction I have implemented on all Lab Computers in the UEL (rm 105 and basement) an automatic shutdown instruction script. At 11:59 PM every night, whether folks are logged in or not, these computers will shutdown.
--bud--”
So, if you’re using the UEL computers into the wee hours, remember to save your work before midnight and let it shutdown. Then turn your computer back on to continue your work. Just be sure to shut it back down when you leave.
According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy:
“Though there is a small surge in energy when a computer starts up, this small amount of energy is still less than the energy used when a computer is running for long periods of time. For energy savings and convenience, consider turning off:
· The monitor if you aren't going to use your PC for more than 20 minutes
· Both the CPU and monitor if you're not going to use your PC for more than 2 hours.”

Nitrate in Ice Cores: A New Emerging, Perspective
Meredith Hastings is an Assistant Professor of Geological Sciences at Brown
Because humans have significantly altered the biogeochemistry of nitrogen in the recent past, she is especially interested in exploring this cycle in the modern environment. In the spring of ‘08-‘09, she will teach a new course entitled, "Weather and Climate."
On Campus______________________
S4 GIS Institute
Enrollment is now open for S4's semi-annual GIS Institute, January 5-16.
GIS is a set of tools for mapping and spatial analysis that is useful in many modes of research from econometrics to ethnography.
The institute will provide an intensive 2-week training in tools for analysis and visualization of spatial relationships. Topics range from cartography to spatial statistics. With guidance from faculty and staff, participants will learn to apply GIS to a problem of their choosing.
The Institute is free. It is a cooperative activity of S4 along with the University Libraries, Earthlab, and PSTC.
Space is limited and an online application is required (deadline 11/10/08): http://www.s4.brown.edu/gis.
Graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and staff are eligible to enroll. We particularly encourage participation by doctoral students who may have a use for these skills in their research. Additional details are available on our webpage.
