WEEKLY CASUAL LUNCH EVENT: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8

UEL Kitchen, 135 Angell Street 12:00-12:45pm

Mondays, Timmons Roberts and Caroline Karp are hosting a new weekly casual lunch event open to faculty, students, staff and community members. It's bring your own lunch and topics for discussion about environmental policy. The idea is to share information and perspectives; no expertise needed. (Lunch will move to the garden if the weather is permitting.)

CES FALL SEMINAR SERIES: INTRODUCING THE BROWN ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWS PROGRAM

Meet this year's fellows & learn about the Spring 2011 application process

Brown Environmental Fellows is a different kind of summer research experience, introducing Undergraduate environmental scientists to the dynamic interface between environmental science, policy, and practice. Student-faculty-practitioner teams develop research projects to meet shared objectives – directing scientific discovery into channels that will inform current and future management choices.

 

SPRING CLASSES: PHP1700 CURRENT TOPICS IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of environmental health, and demonstrate how environmental health is integrated into various aspects of our lives, both directly and indirectly. Topics to be covered include: toxic metals, vector-borne disease, food safety, water quality, radiation, pesticides, air quality, hazardous waste, risk assessment, and the role of the community in environmental health. Several topics will be presented by guest speakers so that students can learn from the expertise of professionals in the field. Instructor permission required.

THE TRUE COST OF COAL: COAL MINING AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN COLOMBIA

A presentation and public forum with Colombian trade union leader JOSÉ BRITO. Our reliance on coal from Colombia is tainted by coal company practices in the indigenous communities from which the coal comes. Mr. Brito will discuss the human rights abuses and environmental degradation that accompanies coal mining in their communities. Tuesday November 9th - 7pm - List 110. The RI Student Climate Coalition invites you to join us this Monday, 8 November. Take your seat at the table with US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse at 6:30 in RISD’s Tap Room (266 Benefit Street, Providence, 02901). Senator Whitehouse, an important ally for climate policy and clean energy advocates in the US Senate, will forecast what to expect out of Washington now that Dirty Fuel and Big Oil controls the House of Representatives, and help us determine what we can do to ensure that Washington goes back to work on a clean energy future.
