Congratulations to CES Graduate, Marie O'Neill '90, who won Large CDC Grant

Marie O'Neill, a 1990 Brown BA from CES who now is Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan, and Sabrina McCormick, a 2005 Sociology PhD graduate, who is now a Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, and whose advisor was CES Interim Director Phil Brown, received a $1.3 million grant in September 2008 from the Centers for Disease Control to study "Reducing Social Disparities of Heatwave Impacts in A Changing Climate."

The project seeks to identify the barriers and facilitators to the adoption of heat health warning systems meant to reduce the adverse impacts of heatwaves.  The investigators intend to address growing impacts of a change in climate that is projected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events.

Bioneers by the Bay: Connecting for Change
October 24-26, 2008 in New Bedford, MA
http://connectingforchange.org

The Fourth Annual Bioneers by the Bay: Connecting for Change conference, presented by the Marion Institute, is an internationally acclaimed annual gathering of environmental, industry and social justice innovators who have demonstrated visionary and practical models for restoring the Earth and its inhabitants.

We have planned a rather remarkable three days of live keynote presentations, afternoon workshops, an extensive Youth Initiative program, a downlink of the 19th Annual Bioneers Conference in California [www.bioneers.org], an exhibition hall featuring sustainable businesses and organizations, a community action center, films, music, art installations, a farmers’ market and local & organic food.  As a national Beaming Bioneers Conference site, we join eighteen other sites throughout the entire country in producing a local Bioneers Conference. We will be telecasting plenaries from the main San Rafael Bioneers Conference, which is in its 19th year, each afternoon.
