“Is Sustainability Sufficient? Life Regeneration and the Built Environment”, Dr. Bill Reed
An internationally recognized proponent and practitioner of sustainable architecture, Bill is president of the Integrative Design Collaborative, a consulting organization working to lift green building design practice into one that is fully integrated with living systems. His work centers on creating the framework for and managing the integrative, whole-systems design process; emphasizing building evolutionary capability in design, construction, and engagement with our environment. The objective: to improve the overall quality of the physical, social and spiritual life of our living places.

Founded in 1992, the Childhood Lead Action Project (CLAP) works to eliminate childhood lead poisoning through education, parent support, and advocacy. The Project is the only organization in Rhode Island devoted exclusively to this critical issue. CLAP with Honorary Chairs Senator Jack Reed and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse present the 2008 Lead Conference, Getting to Zero: Eliminating Childhood Lead Poisoning in Rhode Island. The 16th Anniversary Awards Luncheon will be held at 12:30pm with Guest Speaker, Lois Gibbs, Community Leader at Love Canal, NY and Executive Director, Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ).

The World Bank’s Film Contest on Climate Change

Submission deadline: October 24th, 2008
The World Bank’s Social Development Department is calling for submissions to a world wide documentary competition, "Vulnerability Exposed: Social Dimensions of Climate Change". We hope to receive submissions of 2-5 minute documentaries which creatively showcase the social implications of climate change in the areas of conflict, migration, urban space, rural institutions, drylands, social policy, indigenous peoples, gender, governance, forests and/or human rights.
The film must be a minimum of two minutes and a maximum of five minutes long. All entries must be submitted by 11:59pm (US Eastern Time) on Friday, October 24, 2008. Films in all languages are accepted for the Contest. However, entrants are strongly encouraged to include subtitles and/or a full-length script in English, to facilitate public outreach and the contest judging process. By entering, contestants agree to give permission to the Social Development Department of the World Bank to screen their films at events and on its website during and following the contest period. Intern Position Available, U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, Law and Policy Section
The Law and Policy Section (LPS) advises and assists the Assistant Attorney General on legal and policy issues. Working with the Office of Legislative Affairs, LPS coordinates the Environment and Natural Resources Division's legislative program. LPS represents the Department of Justice on interagency groups of a variety of issues that relate to the mission of the Division. LPS also litigates amicus cases and undertakes other specially assigned litigation projects at the trial and appellate levels. Other duties include monitoring citizen suits, responding to citizen mail, congressional, and FOIA requests, and serving as the Division's ethics officers. LPS attorneys also coordinate the Division's activities on international environmental matters and environmental justice matters.
Duties of the unpaid undergraduate intern position include: attending congressional hearings and reporting on environmental legislation; researching legal and policy issues; and providing support for the section's amicus litigation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, pass a mandatory background check, and be willing to commit for a period of at least ten weeks. Applicants should be either enrolled as undergraduates during the internship, or planning on returning to their school in the time period following the conclusion of the internship. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis but must be received no later than the following application deadlines:
- For Winter Internships (January- March 2009, dates flexible): November 7, 2008
- For Spring Internships (March- May/June 2009, dates flexible): January 16, 2008
