Summer Course – Popular Music and the City

 

American Civilization 19, Section 9
Popular Music and the City

This course will examine the relationship between popular music and its social and cultural context by concentrating on three urban music forms: blues, soul, and hip hop.  Readings will focus on: (1) concepts such as audiences, the music industry, cultural infrastructure, youth culture, and race; (2) processes such as urbanization, demographic change, globalization, and politicization of popular music.

Silent Spring Institute, a non-profit institute studying the environment and women’s health, seeks researcher with IT skills and background in environmental health science. We are a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in epidemiology, toxicology, chemistry, GIS, and communications. Annual budget of approximately $1.8 million supports a staff of 14, working with collaborating investigators at Harvard, Brown, SUNY–Stony Brook etc. Research focuses on breast cancer and environmental pollutants, especially endocrine disrupting compounds. We seek applicants with dual skills and interests in environmental health science and IT.

ESA Fall Policy Internship

 

The Ecological Society of America, a nonprofit, scientific organization of nearly 10,000 ecological scientists, offers a 3-month, paid ($3,000 stipend), Fall Policy Internship in its Washington, DC office.  With a start date of September 4, 2007 the Policy Intern will help the Society's Public Affairs Office track environmental legislation and proposed rule changes, will attend hearings and other relevant meetings, and assist with Hill events.  In addition, the Policy Intern will work closely with the Society's Policy Analyst and team of expert scientists in facilitating scientific input to policy issues.
