Forest Classification according to NDVI Threshold of .35 (1980)

The red areas are pixels with NDVI vegetation abundance values of .35 or above in 1980. This is the area that would be classified as forest in 1980 if such a threshold were used to separate forested areas from other types of vegetation. This is 77.04 km2 more forested area than what was calculated as existing in 1976 using this threshold method, a 14% increase from 1976 and a 11% increase in forest cover from 1972. As you can see from the image many more small areas of high vegetation in the left of the image are classified as forest than in the previous two images (Figures 17 & 18). In order to understand the problems associated with this method it helpful to examine the histograms of the NDVI values for these scenes (see Figure 21).
