NDVI Saturation Effects at High Levels of Vegetation

The saturation effects of NDVI can be shown by plotting the values of NDVI given to individual pixels verses the actual level of vegetation abundance of those pixels as measured in the field. NDVI correlates well with Leaf Area Index (LAI), Biomass, and other vegetation quantification field methods up to a threshold level. At this threshold level of vegetation abundance NDVI values no longer correlate well to actual vegetation levels. This threshold has been found between a LAI of 2 to 6, depending on the type of vegetation and the experimental conditions employed in the study (Hatfield et al. 1985).
