The representative spectral signatures of vegetation, dry grass and soil are shown above over the visible through infrared wavelengths. Vegetation is unique in the extreme difference of reflectance values at the visible red

(.6 -.7um) verses the near infrared (.7-1.1). It is this difference that is used to estimate vegetation through NDVI.
