Spatial Models

The analyses conducted in this study all have a spatial aspect, and are analyzed using spatial models. This study attempts to recreate land use policies as models developed in GIS (Geographic Information Systems). This offers a better understanding of these policies, and has allowed forecasting of their effects.

There are two main models in this study. The buildout model recreates the process that determines how many houses can be built on a parcel of land, in an attempt to understand the aggregate effect of this development. An introduction to this model, along with an explanation of how it differs from other buildout models is in the buildout section of this site.

The second model presented is the openspace prioritization system. This model recreates the process of evaluating potential parcels for openspace acquisition. This model helps evaluate sets of priorities, and how they apply to the town. Its purpose is both to inform the process of creating an openspace plan, and to serve as a guide when evaluating parcels for acquisition. More background information on this model is in the openspace section.
