Openspace Positions and Objectives for Charlestown

Three survey questions address the issues of:

Below are graphs that represent aggregate findings for each of these questions.

Openspace Positions

As seen in the graph at right, 68% of respondents believe that Charlestown needs to acquire more land to preserve as openspace. 28% are not sure whether Charlestown needs to acquire more preserved openspace, but they are concerned with keeping the community looking as it currently does. Only 3% of the respondents are opposed to openspace acquisition efforts. This overwhelming support of preservation efforts is in concert with the community's recent approval of a $2 million municipal openspace bond.

Openspace Objectives

Because local openspace planners did not have a clear definition of objectives, this question was posed to gauge the public's expectations and priorities for preserving openspace. The top objective for openspace acquisition is protection of water resources. Preservation of Charlestown's unique character and design ranks second, followed by decreasing the rate of land development. The aggregate results were used to drive a predictive model for Charlestown's future openspace acquisitions.
