Site-Specific Findings

55 respondents (19 Phase II)

Respondents report that the most appropriate uses for this site, if acquired as openspace, would be to use it as a wildlife preserve with hiking paths or for a setting/picnic area. Open-ended responses (see below, Question 6) indicate that respondents may have been answering questions for Fort Ninigret itself, and not the views across Ninigret Pond. This site ranked third in the analysis of time spent at survey sites, suggesting that people value accessibility to openspace around Ninigret Pond. Wildlife preserves with hiking trails and setting/picnic areas are clearly preferred uses for these sites. However, further alterations to these environments are not preferred. The longitudinal analysis of residence time found that, while valued highly by all residence cohorts, this is the third most important site for potential openspace amongst respondents who have lived in Charlestown 0-3 years and 11-20 years. The longitudinal analysis of respondent age found that this is the second most important site amongst respondents 21-40 years old and 51-60 years old.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to improve this landscape?

  • Leave as it is.
  • Kind of nice as it is.
  • Leave it alone and protect the water from any further contamination from sewage.
  • Build docks, waterway rights
  • Install more markers to describe the significance of this site to the history of Charlestown.
  • Install more markers to describe the history of this site.
  • Restore and better identify for visitors.
  • Improvements should be considered along any body of water such as Ninigret Pond to lessen the environmental impacts. Shell fish fishing use to be a healthy past time. The pressures of over use by the influx of summer visitors come at a environmental cost.
  • Keep it natural
  • I have a problem with spending much money on lands that are likely to be under water in fifty years..
