Site-Specific Findings

34 respondents (11 Phase II)

This site ranked last in the analysis of how frequently driving past sites affects valuation. It is infrequently visited. The longitudinal analysis of residence time found that this is the fourth highest valued site amongst respondents who have lived in Charlestown for 0-3 years. All other residence cohorts place low or negative value on this site. The longitudinal analysis of respondent age found that this site is positively valued by respondents 51-60 years, but all other age cohorts place negative value on this site as a potential openspace. Respondents report that the most appropriate use for this site, if acquired as openspace, would be to use it as a wildlife preserve with hiking paths. Respondents are split about using this site for a swimming area. Open-ended responses (see below, Question 6) reveal that aside from illegality of swimming in Rhode Island quarries, residents have mixed feelings about appropriate uses for sites like this.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to improve this landscape?

  • Access to public
  • Public access
  • Very inviting water fails to reveal old quarrying equipment and wires underwater. Site is dangerous as is. Would have to be draining and debris cleaned out to be safe. Super cold water on hot summer days has been known to induce shock related strokes in overheated swimmers. I always thought that the Recreation Department could make a profit running a natural type swimming hole. I don't know if this site could be insured for swimming by a public entity as quarry swimming is illegal by RI State Law.
  • Protect from intrusion by youth and older people, too.
  • I'm not sure but this sight may have some historical significance. I do not know of any other Quarry in Charlestown. There are many places to swim in Charlestown and I would not wish to see this developed for that purpose. Should be left as is.
  • The quarries are also historical sites of a past which many people from this area feel the need to protect from housing and industrial development. They could be enhanced in a manner that would encourage tourism and add a thing of beauty to our town. San Antonio,Tx. has done this with their deserted quarries, adding gardens and greenery with paths going around them. A real thing of beauty and yet the wild life seems to enjoy it along with the people. Make it beautiful and share it with us. DO NOT HIDE IT AWAY.
  • Continue to allow re-vegetation
  • I think this site should be upgraded for the safety of the public and opened for use
