Farm on Maple Lake Farm Road

Site-Specific Findings

30 respondents (14 Phase II)

Respondents report that the most appropriate use for this site, if acquired as openspace, would be to use it as a wildlife preserve with hiking paths. The longitudinal analysis of residence time found that this site is valued most by respondents who have lived in Charlestown for 20 or more years. However, this valuation is moderate, and respondents of other residence years did not value this site greatly for openspace. The longitudinal analysis of despondent age found that respondents 41-50 years old value this site more than others, who place moderately low value on this site.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to improve this landscape?

  • Restore or tear down farm buildings.
  • Leave it as is!
  • This farm was originally part of the local Finnish character. Where city tourists around the turn of the last century would weekend at Pond Side here and on nearby Pasquisett enjoying the sauna baths that existed and then a dip in the cool waters. Run down remains of these old sauna houses/shacks can still be found in the woods.
  • Sites like the farm on Maple Lake Road provides a snapshot of what a small dairy farm was like. Perhaps serve as an educational/recreational experience for future generations. Also help to protect the pond to the east. Such openspace provides a excellent area for groundwater recharge.
