Site-Specific Findings

49 respondents (11 Phase II)

Wildlife preserves with hiking trails are clearly preferred uses for these sites. However, further alterations to these environments are strongly opposed. This site ranked second in the analysis of time spent at survey sites, suggesting that people value accessibility to openspace around Quonochantaug Pond. The longitudinal analysis of residence time found that this is the most valued site by respondents who have lived in Charlestown for 3-10 years. All other residence cohorts place approximately half that value on this site as potential places for protected openspace. The longitudinal analysis of respondent age found that respondents 21-40 years old think this site has the highest value for potential openspace. Respondents 60 years or older rank this site as their second priority for potential openspace.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to improve this landscape?

  • I favor preventing any further development around the coastal ponds.
  • I like it the way it is. From end of West Beach Rd north to the pond shore, with the exception of the two or three houses at the beginning, is I believe all public land of various jurisdictions. Some joint plan of ownership and management should be undertaken to see than it's roll as a place of public access for various activities is maintained.
  • I believe that it's already protected. There are some undeveloped lots in that area but they are fairly wet sites and access to them may not be possible.
  • Again witnessed the 1938 Hurricane and remember survivors who rode on their home or section thereof, across the Pond. To witness development along the perimeter of Quonnie Pond, as do the excessive number of boats tied on moorings, has changed its visual and water qualities. Jet Skis should be forbidden from its waters. Enough already!
  • Whatever is decided, this site needs to be protected environmentally. If any "development" occurs, I would like the site to be preserved for family and/or school study activities.
  • This should be protected as is.
  • Prohibit development that would impact its pristine environment
  • Define a maximum number of vehicles per day allowed access to the beach area.
  • Improve the road.
