Site-Specific Findings

38 respondents (8 Phase II)

Respondents report that the most appropriate uses for this site, if acquired as openspace, would be to use it as a wildlife preserve with hiking paths, ball fields or for a setting/picnic area. The longitudinal analysis of respondent age found that respondents of different age groups value this site differently as potential openspace. Respondents 21-50 years old place negative value on this site, while respondents 51 and older value this site positively.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to improve this landscape?

  • More of a park area for events involving the citizens of Charlestown
  • Make it available for public use without destroying it's natural habitat.
  • Create a picnic area and, perhaps, a signed nature walk.
  • Unfortunately, the Town Council has been secretly attempting to site a telecommunications tower here. If they are successful, this will not be a positive improvement to the landscape. You could say then that the way to improve this landscape would be for the council not to secretly negotiate to put the tower here. But don't hold your breath on this. That field is primarily a recreation site yet it's an important part of the character of the town hall, I believe. A tower will make it ugly, that is, until we get use to it.
  • I'd like it to reflect the townspeople. Enlarge the police station. Have drugstore, shoe repair, cleaners, and other areas: to focus on those who live here all year, as opposed to the tourists. The towns people need a focus point as a town, not by special interests.
  • I think that this area would be perfect for a town center. Usually, in old New England towns, the green is in the vicinity of the Town Hall. I don't usually spend time out this way unless I have business at the Town Hall, but if there were a green to take my kids to, I might spend more time here. Eventually, there might be shops and boutiques which would greatly improve Charlestown's image.
  • Let it all grow back
