Why the Woon?: Woonasquatucket River Greenway Project

The Greenway project also made the Woonasquatucket a likely candidate for study on a watershed level due to its early priorities on multiple-stakeholder input and cooperation.

Coordination between the City of Providence, the Providence Plan, local groups, and state and federal agencies made possible the planning of a 5.7-mile greenway and bike path along the river from Waterplace Park to the Johnston townline.

Goals of the project are to:

  • Increase the recreational and green space available to local residents.
  • Promote business development and reduce crime.
  • Promote river conservation and environmental action.
  • Increase awareness of local history and river ecology.
