Public Participation: Membership

Although the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council has managed to get all the town planners together and on board with the watershed approach, the Council is extremely vulnerable right now with a membership of only the town planners and 6 "non-municipal" community representatives. Attendance at the monthly meetings hovers around 10. Over the past year, the Council has been requested multiple times to offer suggestions for projects like the wetlands restoration project. If one community representative has a cold or can't make the 30 minute drive to Providence-- that community has no voice in what goes on.

Part of the goal of the survey was that, through its distribution, the WRWC might gain a little extra exposure and interest from the community and might reinforce its membership.

  • 24 new entries to the mailing list
  • 4 individuals interested in coming to a meeting
  • 2 phone calls inquiring as to WRWC
Only time will tell if this first round of outreach will add to the membership of the Council and if it will be a sustainable addition. Attendance at monthly meetings is not for everyone and if it means nothing to the participant-- it they feel they cannot contribute or benefit personally or on behalf of their community-- the experience will hold very little value.

See Recommendations-- For WRWC for a few suggestions.
