Topic pages: Added issues

Issues that respondents have written in on the survey can give more insight into what is salient, important, and what respondents felt was lacking the action plan as it stood.

Listed below are the issues added verbatim from survey respondents. The numbers represent total number of added issues for that topic.

Water Quality

Key Word

"Continued education about keeping oil from auto repair, oil delivery, and do-it-yourself oil changes out of water and watershed. Dispose properly."

Education

Disposal

"Inspection and enforcement of existing regulations"

Inspection

Enforcement

"Comprehensive technical review and adequate agency staff resources together with accountability by design engineers in the form of requiring professional certification for all application and supporting document submittals."

Accountability

"DEM to develop an explicit, positive, powerful, and effective urban wetland policy to protect and enhance urban water resources. (Currently the policy seems to be to allow maximum development possible since urban areas are developed to the point where there are no significant values to the local water resources.)"

Wetlands

"UPGRADE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS TO TERTIARY TREATMENT."

Sewage

Upgrade

"BUILD FISH LADDERS FOR ANADROMOUS FISH (HERRING). WHADDYA THINK? LETS GET GOING! A FISH LADDER IS PROPOSED FOR THE HEADWATERS OF THE WOONASQUATUCKET (WOONASQUATUCKET RESERVOIR)IN NORTH SMITHFIELD. IF WE BUILD IT THE FISH WILL COME. INTRODUCTION OF A ALEWIFE POPULATION TO THE RIVER SYSTEM WILL DRAMATICALLY ENHANCE SPORTFISHING IN UPPER NARRAGANSETT BAY AND CREATE A GAMEFISH POPULATION ITSELF IN THE RIVER, NOT TO MENTION DRAMATICALLY ENHANCING THE BIODIVERSITY OF THE RIVER. THE SIGN OF LIFE IN A RIVER IS THE SIGHT OF FISH SWIMMING. LETS GO ON THIS"

"Wet Weather Flows in river indicate high coliform levels."
Wet weather
"Add a riparian zone around the Promenade ST section of the river."
Riparian buffer

Drinking Water

"Non-transient community wells (small systems) need to be included in drinking water protection, conservation, and drought planning. Particularly pertinent in this watershed, since most of the urban area, including parts of Smithfield receive their water from the Scituate/Providence system, is the issue of small systems obtaining water from groundwater sources."

"Installation of fish ladders in resotration projects, regardless of the quality of the water. Opportunity should be used when available."

Fish ladders
"Residents need to be educated (through newsletters, videos, newspaper articles, TV advertisements, guided walks in the watershed, etc)regarding the functions and values associated with the River and it's surrounding wetlands."
Education
"well i think you should make it almost like a park (like Roger Williams) I think that would be nice for the kids and also for the animals and the people"
Park
"Urban wildlife and its diversity should be treated separately from that in more pristine settings. Simpler more common forms and features can be highly important to an urban community, although of no unusual habitat or species value."

Urban

Wildlife

"Sampling along the river indicates a large amount of trash and debrie that can be picked up. From cars to refrigerators a basin wide cleanup needs to be accomplished"

Dam Repair and Removal

"State and local government sharing in costs for private dam repairs"

Cost sharing
"Document and make public aware of the history of each dam, its orginal design and uses, the associated industry, and the dam's place in the evolution of the community. Provide visitor access to the dams. Treat the dams as important historic and cultural resources."

Flood Protection

"In North Providence at least one pond has been filled and several creeks/streams that show on old topo maps have been culverted or covered. Identify and work to restore."

Restoration
"When dams are repaired, fish ladders should be included in the design. Eels, shad, and other anadramous/catadramous fish could use the Woon.waterway."
Fish ladders
"mill building in this neghborhood are inheratly in the flood plane not much can be done except provde better drainage mill building in this neghborhood are inheratly in the flood plane not much can be done except provde better drainage"

"I'm not sure much can be done at this time with flooding since the lower river has already been altered and somewhat channelized from the Smithfield line to the mouth."
Channelized

Public and Environmental Health

"Continuing program to inform public about the contamination levels of fish and turtles and impacts to human health and developmenet. Emphasize the future prospects of a clean river with edible wildlife."

Education
"I also think Fish consumption (leading to mercury or other types of toxic ingestions) especially for children and women in and along the river is very important to identify and educate people about. Along with this there should be a fish tissue sampling program to ensure we know all the risks associated with fish consumption in the area."

Transportation

"Opportunities to use public transportion to access recreational resources in upper watershed."

Recreation
"Opportunities for economic development/ small bicycle repair and accessory shops along proposed bike path. Could be used as social integration as in other cities."
Bike path

Historic Preservation and Cultural Heritage

"I think the redevelopment and preservation of mill buildings should be done with economic opportunities for people in the respective communities in mind. In other words, redevelopment plans should in some way employ, educate or benefit the people in the communities both economically and socially."

Benefit community
"through the preservation of our history we rededicate our future if we do not protect what inspired america to be america, we will become a faceless nation preoccupied.through the preservation of our history we rededicate our future if we do not protect what inspired america to be america, we will become a faceless nation preoccupied."
Patriotism
"put money in to the nighboorhoods and then the rest of your topics can be followed up the more people living in these areas will enforce the need for every one of the topics."
Invest in community
"Preservation and reuse of historic structures including mills, mill and worker and other modest older houses, stores, bath house, dams, community facilities, railroad and trolley artifacts, Narragansett sites, etc. especially in Olneyville while there is still a chance to preserve and highlight the remnants of Olneyville's unique history. "
Preservation and reuse
"Build a sense of community among current residents, as a basis for creating support for affordable family-nurturing neighborhoods."
Community building

Economic Development

"Ensure that economic development plans and actions are consistent with Comp Plans and will not harm ecosystems or local economy"

Comp Plans
"I think economic development in low income areas should when possible seek to offer meaningful employment opportunities to disadvantged individuals in the community. Or in some way the economic development should try to reach out to low income or most stressed populations in the community directly."
Low income areas
"Make state economic planning activities much more open to public scutiny and comment - ensure that economic development is appropriate, require market demand studies, etc."
Open to public scrutiny

vWatershed Identity

"Outreach should extend to people in different languages and via various mediums across the watershed - in churches, school curriculums, community centers, etc..."

Multi-lingual outreach
"Coordinate outreach efforts of NGOs and state. Develop a plan for coordinated efforts."

Final Comments

"I see no mention of one of the most environmentally sound organizations, namely the Appalachian Mountain Club, particularly the Narragansett Chapter;they get active in community policing of env. problems. I never see articles about them in RI;they could be a vital resource. They should be approached and activated. I am a former member from Ma. I am considering getting re-involved at the local level."

Appalachian Mountain Club
"the reason I rated biodiversity highest is because the status and condition of biological communities will tell us what is going on in most of the other categories;i.e., if we're properly taking care of water quality, land use, transportation, etc then the biology will be OK. Conversely, if we see biological impairments, we know that something is not going well, regardless of compliance with chemical permit requirements. I don't think this concept was adequately conveyed in the choices provided under the topic of biodiversity"

"We don't want a bike path. Making the river navigable by non-motorized boats and canoes with public access to portages at dam sites would be ideal. Also, contaminated sediment removal to allow the underwater vegetation to be rid of toxicity would be beneficial for all aquatic life as well as producing a lasting fishing and recreational environment for the future."
