A study of two proposed developments using GIS

This is a 331 acre property that was formerly used as a school for mentally handicapped people which was closed in 1994. In 1997, the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation was given the responsibility to redevelop the site. Since then, the property has been closed to the public while EDC has been removing the majority of the old school buildings in order to prepare the site for was is to become of the property. The plan for a 26-acre Job Corps Center in two of the remaining buildings in the east of center portion of the property is currently underway. This leaves a few paved roads, a couple buildings and a wastewater treatment facility in the remaining 309 acres of the site. Presently, the property is undeveloped with a very open environment and is located off of Route 2 (aka South County Trail) in a very rural area of eastern Exeter. This property is 3,168 acres on the Narragansett Bay in northern North Kingstown and was used as a former United States naval base that was shut down in the 1960's. Since then there has been some commercial development and redevelopment occuring under the authority of Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. This previous redevelopment has been directed towards the area in between the golf course and the southern waterfront, along the very northern edge of the western portion of the golf course, and around the two large piers in the northern part of the property. The airport terminal in the southeast corner is currently being used for private planes and there is also the Quonset Air Museum that is open to the public. Also open to the public is the Noth Kingstown Marina located in West Allen Harbor in the very northern portion of the property, as well as the 18-hole golf course and restaurant near the center of the property. The remaining half of the site may have abandoned buildings still standing, or the old buildings and their foundations have been demolished leaving dirt and regrowth, or the once vacant lots have become brushland or forest.
