SACKETT STREET PARK

PARK CRIME - Understanding the Context of Crime

The crime maps shown here were generated with GIS software
(Arcview 3.2), using a crime report database for the entire city of
Providence. They express the 'density' of the mapped criminal violations,
meaning that both the distribution and the clustering of the violations are
conveyed. For more detailed information on the methodology involved
in creating the maps, go to Park Crime Methods and view the last section
entitled 'Processing and manipulating the resulting crime maps'.

The total crime density map shows the location of a hotspot on the point at which three streets - Rodman, Cadillac, and Niagara - converge. This area is directly to the east of the park. Both the violent crime map and the non-violent criminal violation map indicate that all the hotspots are farther away from the park. The rest of the crime-type maps show a big clustering effect on the tri-street intersection, especially property violations and environmental disorder violations, which have major hotspots in that region. One house located directly on that intersection seems to be largely responsible for many of the violations.

(Note: The units for all density calculations are violations/acre)
