PARK CRIME

Utilizing GIS software, I mapped a crime report database for the city
of Providence in order to attempt an understanding of the nature of
crime trends, and how these interact with the parks system. I looked
at city-wide dynamics to determine which parks might be most vulnerable
to crime, and how my case-study parks fit into these patterns. I also
investigated the specific crime situation around my case-study parks.
This project did not seek to provide a detailed criminological analysis of
crime circumstances in Providence. Rather, I wanted to paint a general
picture of the criminal environment in which the parks exist, and most
importantly, relate the results to what was discovered from the park users interviews. In other words, how does the the actual crime situation of parks associate with how people perceive park crime and safety? (See Linking Crime and Perceptions)
