RESULTS - Park Crime With the intention of understanding the specific crime dynamics in each case-study park region, crime density maps were generated for each crime type for all the case studies. To view these maps, go to any of the Case Study Parks and view the Park Crime section. The aggregate 'total crime' maps showed that aside
from Merino Park The various crime-type maps did not exhibit any generalizable trends across all parks in terms of which crime types were most prevalent on the park perimeter. The maps allowed one to determine the presence of properties on the immediate park perimeters with significant co-occurrences of violations - essentially, 'problem houses'. I initially became interested in investigating this aspect, when people that I interviewed mentioned that there were certain houses from which a lot of the crime in the neighborhood stemmed, and that these problems were essentially 'leaking' into the park. Dexter Park, Donigian Park, Merino Park, and Sackett Street Park all had certain properties directly adjacent to them that had many types of criminal violations, as well as numerous violations. This is not to say that these houses necessarily cause specific problems for the park. Yet because they do contribute significantly to the dynamics of crime in the immediate vicinity of the park, their role may be interesting to consider. For an assessment of how knowledge of these crime
patterns relate to the perceptions of crime and safety discovered at these
parks, go to Linking Crime and Perceptions. |
