Linking Crime and Perceptions - RESULTS

The following lists represent hierarchies ranking the case study parks
in terms of highest to lowest crime, worst to best perceptions of safety,
and highest to lowest perceptions of crime. For a description of how
these hierarchies were formed, see Methods.

Total Crime: This ranking was based on the total number of all
crimes for each case study park region. This number is shown in
parentheses.

Perceptions of Safety: This ranking is organized with the parks having the worst perceptions of safety (i.e. people felt least safe) at the top. The numbers in parentheses are the scores assigned to each park based on the interviewee's responses to the questions gauging perceptions of safety. The scores represent the sum of the percent of respondents who:
a) stated that they felt safe in the park
b) stated that they would visit the park alone
c) stated that they would visit the park at night

Perceptions of Crime: This ranking is organized with the parks having the highest perceptions of crime (i.e. people felt that a lot of crime occurred at the park) at the top. The numbers in parentheses are the scores assigned to each park based on the interviewee's responses to the questions gauging perceptions of crime. The scores represent the sum of the percent of respondents who stated that they knew of criminal activities occurring in the park.
