- Environmental Resources Working Group: In existence since 1996, the RWG is charged with oversight of environmental and ecological concerns related to both campus building projects and campus operations.
The RWG is comprised of managers from facilities planning, facilities operations and management, purchasing, computing, residential life, and other key administrative offices.
In conjunction with the Facilities Planning Office and the Facilities Operations and Management Department, the RWG sets energy use guidelines. In addition, major new projects and existing buildings are reviewed for energy improvements that are shown to be justified by financial payback analysis.
- Facilities Planning : Continually updates the new construction energy standards; includes a member of the Energy Council in facilities projects; thinks broadly about the trade-offs between environmental standards and building standards.
- Energy Auditing and Environmental Construction of New Buildings : Dartmouth has committed itself to performing energy audits of all new buildings. This began with the Moore psychology building. Dartmouth also has worked with environmental consultant, Marc Rosenbaum, on a number of projects, to include increase environmental consciousness in design. These included the new Skiway lodge, Whittemore Hall (a LEED building), and McCulloch Hall. In the fall of 2000, Dartmouth committed itself to being even more proactive in this area by pledging to follow LEED standards and by employing an energy/sustainability consultant with each building project. This will begin with all new buildings, starting with new residential facilities. Facilities Operations and Management has also created a student intern position to analyze energy data and suggest areas for potential savings.
- Master Plan : In its master plan, Dartmouth is committed to responsible environmental practices. Dartmouth has adopted the standards of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program of the United States Green Building Council for our future construction. Dartmouth has also implemented extensive energy conservation and recycling programs, and is exploring the use of renewable fuels. Strategic Imperatives for Academic Facilities website.
