The approach is to engage and involve the Harvard community of faculty, students and administrators, working within Harvard's decentralized structure to enable local management involvement, develop understanding of sustainability, develop networks within and between faculties, and enable the community to Institutionalize sustainable practices.
- Harvard Green Campus Initiative: (website will be significantly updated by Summer 2004)
The Harvard Green Campus Initiative (HGCI) works to engage diverse university populations in the pursuit of sustainability by acting as a "learning institution." HGCI administers incentive programs making needed resources and information available for operations-related campus staff; providing educational materials; hosting best practices exchanges; raising awareness through marketing activities; and offering project management support for internship projects. A sample of programs within this initiative includes Green Campus Loan Fund, Computer Energy Reduction, Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and Sustainable Buildings .
- HPRE Sustainable Buildings Program:
The HPRE Sustainable Building Program Coordinator develops resources to support sustainable building design, operation, renovations, and planning efforts. The Sustainable Buildings Program has developed internal guidelines and resources such as green buildings specifications (draft form), database of products and service providers, construction waste management plans, and communication forums (e.g. design team charrettes and internal working groups)
- Harvard High-Performance Building Management Toolkit:
Harvard Green Campus Initiative and University Operations Services' Facility Maintenance Operations created this toolkit is to empower building managers with the tools and resources necessary to move Harvard's existing buildings toward high performance energy efficiency management. This toolkit takes a "whole-building" approach to high performance energy efficiency, demonstrating increased energy savings through integrating all sectors of building operation.
- Harvard's Strategic Plan : How it all works together
- Lessons learned from its four LEED Pilot Projects: LEED should be adopted before schematic design phase; Sustainable materials consultant hired during Construction Documentation phase; Life Cycle Cost Accounting helpful to evaluate technologies; operations engineer as "gatekeeper"-following through on environmental decisions after every meeting; learning environment aided by user questionnaires, product trials, and energy metrics; community involvement key; energy star now a process and goal for all Harvard's residential buildings.
