Stakeholders identified several goals for transportation. These goals are to:

"Reduce the number of people driving"

Many stakeholders recognize that it is in their long term interest to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles (SOV) coming into the city. This goal would help ease the growing congestion and parking demand.

"Provide adequate parking for short term parkers"

Providing parking for short term parkers (eg. customers, visitors) is important especially for many of the businesses. As the problem assessment has shown, a lack of parking can deter people from traveling to Providence. Some stakeholders have suggested moving long term parking for employees/students out of the city to free up parking for the short term parkers.

"Provide commuters/students with safe, alternative travel choices"

People are more inclined to getting out of their cars if they are presented with a menu of options for traveling. Moreover, having a set of travel alternatives provide greater security. People can rest assured that they will have safe and convenient transportation, even at night. This is especially important to the universities.

"Provide a forum where transportation concerns could be brought together"

The majority of the stakeholders state that there is a transportation disconnect between members of the private sector. Stakeholders want a common forum where they can communicate and share resources on transportation planning.
