TRICHLOROETHYLENE

In Rhode Island, Trichloroethylene (TCE) generation has decreased sharply from 615,295 lbs. in 1987 to 36,718 lbs. in 1998. The 94 percent reduction can be attributed to a strong national trend to reduce the use of TCE. Originally widely used as a degreaser, Trichloroethylene and other chlorinated solvents pose significant threats to the environment if released, as well as threats to human health. As such, TCE carries a high liability and the state has strongly encouraged industries to move toward less toxic solvent alternatives, such as mineral spirits.
