Funding in Providence for public tree planting programs is currently limited to the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program, which is funded by the Mary Elizabeth Sharpe Street Tree Endowment, and also supported by the Helen Walker Raleigh Tree Care Trust. There is also some limited funding for tree planting available through Community Development Block Grants. More funding needs to be allocated for the 40-in-4 program to continue and be successful in its entirety, as well as for additional programs to take place. Research into other possible funding sources both for the city and the state are necessary in order for new statewide programs to be initiated.

Some possible funding sources include The Rhode Island Foundation, grants from DEM, and the RI Tree Council.. Some other sources of potential funding or support for local projects include the Trust for Public Land, which has invested in many notable New England conservation projects as well as Providence-specific projects, The New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, and the America the Beautiful Grants, which have funded several tree planting projects in Rhode Island before.
