In general we recommend that the state should plant a large number
of trees, that it should expect to continue to plant trees for the foreseeable
future, and that it should do as much as possible to support its private
citizens and businesses in the planting of trees. We would also recommend
that the state take great care in the species of trees that are planted.
The carbon models are based on the assumption that the state would be
planting large, fast growing hardwoods such as Pin Oaks (Quercus palustris),
London Planetrees (Platanus x acerifolia), Elms (Ulmus sp.), Honeylocusts
(Gleditsia triacanthos), and Red Maples (Acer rubrum.) These trees will
also provide more secondary benefits such as cooling of heat islands
than smaller, shorter lived fruit trees. The above links lead to more
detailed recommendations that we would like to make to the State of
Rhode Island.
