Sustainable Growth for Brownfields in the Jewelry District
Community Plans from the Old Harbor Forums and Providence 2020

What are the Old Harbor Forums?
The Old Harbor Forums are workshops sponsored by five Providence organizations; the Providence Department of Planning and Development, Providence Preservation Society, Rhode Island Chapter of American Institute of Architects, Providence Foundation and Rhode Island School of Design.  The workshops discussed sustainability plans and proposals for the Jewelry District following the I-195 relocation (Providence Foundation, 2006.)

What is Providence 2020?
Providence 2020 is a vision for sustainable future development in Providence through proposals and considerations from Sasaki, an urban planning firm contracted by the City of Providence.  Providence 2020 has 7 principles to widen the connectivity of the Jewelry District and to create sustainable development in the area:  1) Create parks, 2) Link the valley to Narragansett Bay with a continuous transit spine, 3) Connect Providence neighborhoods to downtown, 4) Incorporate pedestrian friendly streets, 5) Celebrate great architecture, 6) Promote mixed use development, 7) Encourage shared parking in strategic locations.  An example of this are planned parking site areas at Garrahy Courthouse (a current redevelopment project,) and at the Point and Eddy Street intersections in the Jewelry District (Sasaki and the City of Providence, May 2006.)
