Highway 195
Old Harbor Forums Recommendations for I-195
The Old Harbor Forums envision developing bike paths, boulevards and parks in the current highway area. They also see making the bridge underpass of the new highway a connector for bikers and pedestrians through brighter lighting and art. They encourage the re-use of current highway infrastructure and to recycle the leftover demolition materials of the highway as much as possible (Providence Foundation, 2006.)
Providence 2020 Plans for I-195 and Current Completion Schedule
Providence 2020 wants the current public highway land returned to public open space use as much as possible. They recommend more lighting and art for the new bridge underpass. In place of the old highway bridge on the Providence River, they encourage the building of a new smaller pedestrian bridge that is currently estimated to be completed in 6 to 10 years (Sasaki and the City of Providence, May 2006.)
Fall 2007 is when vehicles start eastbound on the new highway. Vehicles will be able to use the new highway in all directions in fall 2009. In winter or spring 2010, the demolition of the old highway is estimated to begin. After the demolition is completed, the rebuilding of city streets in the current I-195 corridor and the redevelopment of private parcels in the Jewelry District will occur (Sasaki and the City of Providence, May 2006.) |
