Drinking Water

IN CHARLESTOWN ALL DRINKING WATER IS GROUNDWATER!

The groundwater aquifer and groundwater recharge areas displayed in the map sustain Charlestown's drinking water supply. These aquifers are the only viable supply of drinking water in the town (Charlestown Wellhead and Groundwater Protection Plan.)
All residents draw their drinking water from wells, and the town has 13 active community wells that supply water service, businesses and other uses. Because activities within the immediate area of a wellhead will greatly affect the quality of water that the well produces, DEM has delineated Wellhead Protection Areas around all wells in town. Because of the proximity of these areas to the wellheads, they should be carefully monitored and shielded from the most intense land uses.
The classification of the town's groundwater is primarily GAA, the highest ranking drinking water class. However, there is one GB-a source that is not suitable for drinking water use without treatment which is located adjacent to the town's landfill area.

"Groundwater is one of Charlestown's most important natural resources because it is irreplaceable" (Charlestown Wellhead and Groundwater Protection Plan). Keeping this in mind, we should be aware of the threats to water quality. Read more on current plans and regulations
