Charlestown

is named after King Charles the II; however, for thousands of years prior to the European invasion of New England, what is now Charlestown was inhabited by Native American Indians such as the Narragansetts. With the arrival of the Europeans, plantations popped up on the fertile coastal plains and in the early 19th century the next phase of development began. Textile mills powered by the Pawkatuck River gave birth to the small villages such as Cross Mills which characterize the town's development pattern to this day.
