Exeter,
RI is a primarily rural community. 70%
of the town's land area remains forest and brushland.
The largest category of developed land is agriculture
which takes up 7.4% of the total land area, or
2,760 acres.

In spite of
the prevalence of open, undeveloped space in Exeter,it
is still essential to continue to protect the town'srural
character through growth management and land use regulations.
Exeter's Comprehensive
Plan (1994) makes several land use recommendations
with the purpose of creating regulations that encourage
both development and the preservation of open space
in the areas most suitable within that particular land
