History:

Exeter today is a primarily rural community as a result of the decrease in a factory-based economy since the 1930s. Exeter is characterized by rural, picturesque forests and thinly distributed residential development. Commercial and industrial land uses are presently limited, although development pressures are not unfamiliar as seen in the case of the Ladd School.

Exeter has developed a local information website that lists important town information, including phone numbers of local government officials, town services, local businesses, and related links. Click here to link to this page.

A review of Exeter's Comprehensive Plan, adopted by the town in 1994, is here. While many of the recommendations made by this plan have since been adopted by the town, the state of RI requires that it be approved by several state agencies. As of April 2001, this has not yet occurred.
