Undeveloped Land

Much of the undeveloped land in Exeter, RI is unprotected. In order to protect the rural character of this town, many of the land use recommendations for Exeter have to do with creating incentives to continue the protection of current open space in Exeter.

Undeveloped land is typically described as land that is still in its natural state, as opposed to open space, which could include developed recreational areas like golf courses and soccer fields. When one refers to open space, they are usually referring to land that is not some sort of building.

Much of the undeveloped land in Exeter will continue to exist because zoning regulations and state and federal regulations prohibit the development of any land categorized as wetlands. For a map of the wetlands in RI, see here.

Over 70% of the land in Exeter remains forest and brushland.
