Preserving
drinking water quality is a major concern for Hopkinton.
With few community wells, most residents and businesses
draw water from backyard wells. It is essential, therefore,
to ensure that the groundwater aquifers from which these
wells draw remain pure, especially when considering that
private wells are not subject to the same strict regulations
as community wells. This map shows the location of the
aquifers, as well as the surrounding groundwater recharge
area (GWRA).

All water within the GWRA drains into the aquifer, and
so it is important to monitor potential
contaminants not only directly on top of the aquifer,
but above the GWRA as well. Access to drinking water also
acts as a limiting agent to growth. Much like the rest
of Hopkinton, the site of the proposed Exit 2 development
has no access to piped water. For this reason, any development,
including recreational facilities, must be sensitive to
the fact that their drinking water will come from on-site
wells. |
