Open Space

There are several types of protected open space in Hopkinton, including, town-owned open space, Audubon-owned land, and Nature Conservancy land. In general, open space can be thought of as unbuildable land-- protected areas as well as lands unsuitable for development such as wetlands and sloped property. Under current zoning, if every piece of developable land were developed, 3,085 additional homes would dot Hopkinton's landscape, which would in effect double the town's current population to 17,000.

Hopkinton is in the beginning stages of developing an open space preservation plan. In spring of 2000, Hopkinton established a municipal land trust funded by the real estate transfer tax.For information on the DEM's open space program, please visit their land acquistion page.

Recreational development has emerged as a potential method of open space preservation that is compatible with the Comprehensive Plan. Recreation provides direct economic benefit to Hopkinton communities, while protecting vulnerable areas from residential subdivisions. The Ell Pond/Long Pond Preserve is one of Rhode Island's most cherished natural vistas, and is popular among day hikers.
