In large part,
current zoning in Hopkinton allows for both 2-acre
and 1-acre developments. In areas where residential
growth is occurring the fastest, commonly in the
most rural areas, zoning is at the 2-acre level.
In recent decades, Hopkinton has experienced strong
pressures to develop from those seeking to live
in a rural surrounding. |
| But
as these new residents build their homes (in accordance
to the 2-acre requirement), the very rural character
they seek is increasingly threatened. |
| Two-acre
zoning promotes this loss of rural quality as homes
and cookie-cutter subdivisions pop up in previously
undeveloped areas. Recognizing this, Hopkinton has
commissioned a Growth
Management Plan, which will hopefully serve
to guide the town into smart planning practices,
including cluster
developments, that will allow for growth while
protecting the character of the town. |
