Threats to Water Quality

This map shows the location of both the aquifers and the GWRA's (Groundwater Recharge Area's) along with the location of community and non-community well heads, and locations of possible contaminants to individual wells. Potential sources of pollution include leaking underground storage tanks or LUSTS (Leaking Underground Storage Tanks), CERCLAS (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or brownfields), and point discharges, or RIPDES (Rhode Island Pollutant Discharge Elimination System). As the map shows, there are many pollution threats to Hopkinton's drinking water located perilously close to wells or atop either the aquifer or the GWRA.

With drinking water coming from a designated sole-source aquifer, Hopkinton must work hard to protect its water quality. The RI Department of Health's Source Water Assessment and Protection program is working to identify pollution threats to drinking water. If you would like more information about the SWAP program or would like to volunteer, please visit the RI Department of Health web site.
