Block Island's roughly 6,000 acres of land, about
one third is already developed, one third is preserved
as open space, with additional land undevelopable
because of coastal or wetland features. This leaves
less than one third available for development. Most
higher density residential and commercial development
is located centrally in the "Old Harbor Village"
area. The island's remaining developed land is mainly
characterized by scattered, low-density, residential
development. (New
Shoreham Comprehensive Plan, 1994) |

The New Shoreham Comprehensive Plan, revised
in 1994, specifies the final goal for proteced
land as approximately one half the island's area.
It also specified that one third of the additional
land needed to reach this final goal be protected
by the year 2000. This intermediate goal has been
met on schedule.

and projected future land use.
