Independent
Sewage Disposal Systems (ISDS): Under the "Rhode
Island Septic System Maintenance Act of 1987" the
town of New Shoreham created a city ordinance in order
to establish a "Wastewater Management Program"
(AMP). The program "provides a framework for the
efficient inspection, repair and maintenance of septic
systems in the town," while still emphasizing that
it is inevitably the homeowner's responsibility for
proper maintenance and use of their ISDS system. Click
here for more information about ISDS and their effects
on environmental quality.

EPA
Grant for Waste Water Management: New
Shoreham, along with the nearby communities of Charlestown
and South Kingstown,
have recently aquired a grant from the EPA for the implementation
of new ISDS technology for the protection of their ground
water resources. This program is still in the planning stages
and will involve the use of new septic system technology which
prevents nitrate pollution. In the past, governmant funding
was often available to municipalities for the improvement
of sewers amd sewage treatment facilities (centralized subsurface
water treatment systems.) Because of this funding for sewer
system improvement has decreased in recent years. The EPA
is now investigating the potential of decentralized subsurface
water treatment methods (using new ISDS technology) for ground
water protection. (Dorothy McClusky, personal communication,
2001)
GIS Water District: New Shoreham
has recently adopted GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
as a means of mapping out the Village's water district. This
tool will allow precise, computerized mapping of the town
area serviced by the municipal water supply. Block island
has employed GIS since the early 80s to map various land charactaristics,
uses, development etc. GIS mapping of the water district will
allow easy overlay and compatibility with other GIS maps.
