Drinking Water

Richmond draws its drinking water from 4 different aquifers: the Beaver-Pasquiset, the Usquepaugh-Queen, and the Upper and Lower Wood. The aquifer yield totals 2,420,000 gallons/day. (1997 Comprehensive Plan)

95% of Richmond residents are served by private, on-site wells. (GrowSmart, RI) The other 5% are served by the Richmond Water Supply Board. 89 residencies and 31 businesses located near Route I-95 and Route 138 - Exit 3 are serviced by the Board. (Economic Development Commission Guidebook,1996) This water line will be extended for new developments, such as Stilson Road.

Although Richmond water quality is good, there is a growing concern about the proximity of wells to possible contaminants that could be seeping into the Well Head Protection Areas or groundwater recharge areas. Visit our threats to water quality page to find out more, and view the results of surveys done on Richmond's wellheads. Click here for results spreadsheet. (.XLS file, 84.5K)
