Along with most of Wahington County, Richmond has experienced phenomenal growth in populationin the past twenty years. Grow Smart Rhode Island has categorized Richmond as a rural/ emerging suburban town. This growth trend is confirmed by the recent census, of which not all findings have been released.

Based on the 2000 census data, Richmond's population increased by 35% from 1990 to 2000!

Growth can be viewed as a positive, especially for economic development, but can also put a strain on town infrastructure and resources. Rapid growth is recognized as a potential problem in Richmond. Three issues of concern are: drinking water protection, preservation of open space, and the overburdening of the Chariho regional school district to which Richmond belongs.

Richmond has adopted certain plans and regulations, such as growth caps and impact fees, in order to better manage rapid growth and maintain Richmond's unique character.
