Richmond Land Use

Undeveloped Land

Does Richmond have "seemingly unlimited" land? (town planner, personal communication)

Richmond has 18,647 acres of undeveloped land. This is 71% of the total area. (1995 data from Grow Smart, RI)

• 2,728 acres agricultural
• 737 acres barren/brush land
• 15,182 acres forest land

(1995 data, Grow Smart)

Some of Richmond's undeveloped land is known as "marginal" or "unsuitable for development." It is deducted from the buildable acreage of the parcel and applies to the following land:

• freshwater wetlands, except that area of perimeter wetland within 50 feet of the edge of any bog, marsh, swamp or pond; or any applicable 100 foot or 200 foot riverbank wetlands
• areas within a High Flood Danger zone
• land within any publicly or privately held easement on which above-ground utilities, including but not limited to electrical transmission lines, are constructed
