Drinking
Water
Drinking water is an issue
that is currently getting a lot of attention in
South Kingstown. There is a general worry about
the quality of the drinking water and the quantity.
Although there is generally good water quality in
South Kingstown, protecting public wells is a concern
in the watersheds.
In many
of the maps that are shown on this site the Chipuxet
subbasin is included. The reason for this is that
the Chipuxet is considered a highly stressed water
supply area. It has been overused and there will
not be able to be any more large wells taking
a lot of water from this subbasin.
The Water
Resources Board is currently doing an in-depth
study that will be out in early summer 2001. This
is a worrisome topic for those dependent on receiving
water from the Chipuxet. The Chipuxet supplies
water to the University of Rhode Island and many
others. In times of drought this will be an even
more important topic.

This map shows
where the wells in South Kingstown are located
and where surface water and ground water recharge
areas are. The Chipuxet subbasin is also shown,
which is a very stressed subbasin. Ground water
recharge areas are important because when there
are contaminant in the recharge area they will
most likely enter the wells. See the threats
to water quality page.
