Are Turner Reservoir
Fish Safe To Eat?
A Risk Assessment of RI Southeast Asian American Fishers
Siemay Lee
My main objective for my thesis involves conducting a health risk assessment of the subsistence-fishing Southeast Asian American population in Rhode Island. Thus, I have two critical pieces of information that I am gathering. One, I am determining the concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn) in fish from the James Turner Reservoir/Central Pond in East Providence, RI. Second, I am surveying RI Southeast Asians (Hmong, Cambodians, Laotian, Vietnamese) on their fish consumption, fish preparation, cooking techniques, and fishing habits. From the information gathered, I plan to assess the health risk of RI Southeast Asians eating fish from the James Turner Reservoir/Central Pond.
