Adolescents and Gardening in the Inner-city

Jennifer Lies

What does a successful entrepreneurial gardening program for inner-city adolescents look like and what benefits can such a program provide? I am exploring the role a combination of gardening and job-training can play in the lives of high-school aged inner-city residents. My research includes two main focuses. First, I am looking at gardening programs, like Food From the Hood in Los Angeles, that incorporate educational aspects. Second, I am interviewing Providence teen-agers about their perceptions of and experiences with gardening. Ideally, such a gardening program would address the interests and vocational needs of the adolescents, while fostering greater environmental awareness as well as more enlightened food purchasing and consumption.
