The Rise of Corporate Environmentalism

What is the role that American business is expected to play in addressing the nation's environmental problems? What are some of the public communications strategies that businesses have acquired to make their image more environmentally-friendly? I am conducting a survey among Brown University students (specifically freshmen and seniors) where I hope to discover their attitudes and opinions towards environmental advertising and consumerism. I am conducting 2 focus groups and 100 face-to-face written surveys. Do students, as presumably highly educated consumers, prove to be harder to convince of a company's environmental commitment? Does it matter to students if the products they purchase come from environmentally-friendly businesses? I am studying the commercials' effect on the consumers' perception of the company as an environmentally-friendly organization. Companies have devoted more resources in the last decade to promoting themselves as environmentally-friendly organizations than ever before. It remains to be seen whether their money is wisely spent.
